It's rec time...
So, in accordance with the wishes of the lovely Ghostie, here are some recs for a friend of hers. And also some picspams, because picspams are like dessert! It's not really a fandom experience without some tasty picspams, even if they're probably not healthy for you. Er. What? Also, it's helpful to see one or two before reading fic so that you know what the band members bloody look like.
Like this:

Fall Out Boy! You've almost certainly heard one of their songs, even if you don't think you have. Sugar, We're Goin Down was their first big hit; I can't find a decent quality youtube video of it, but there's a link on their myspace on the left about halfway down (you should watch it because it's a good song, and also Deer Boy!). That myspace also has links to videos from their oldest album, namely Saturday, Dead On Arrival, and Grand Theft Autumn. All lovely songs.
Dance, Dance was the next, although not as huge of a hit; the music video is good for watching because Pete Wentz is hilarious when he's acting like a dork, and also Patrick is hot like burning. Not geeky-student Patrick, but rock-star-on-the-stage Patrick, hell yes.
A Little Less Sixteen Candles followed, with the music video that inspired a thousand vampire AU's. Scary-looking black vampire (the really, really tall one) is Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes, Lead Vampire Dandy is William Beckett from The Academy Is..., other Vampire Dandy (in the center for the spinning-chick scene) is Brendon Urie from Panic! At the Disco. I think there are a couple other cameos; all in all, it's crossover city. Also, people are hot. Watch it!
The first single from their most recent album was This Ain't A Scene (title abbreviated for your convenience). The music video is worth watching, mostly because it hilariously spoofs on all the Drama around the band in recent times, including Pete's unfortunate adventures with having his inappropriate cell phone pictures spread through the internet like malaria. It's like an introduction, if you will. Featuring guest appearances from William Beckett, Vampire Dandy, Deer Boy, the Moon Man from the VMAs, and a complete Guns 'n' Roses ripoff that got Avenged Sevenfold fans up in arms.
Most recent single: Thnks fr th Mmrs. Occasionally referred to as "Thanks for the Consonants" because we can. The music video consists almost entirely of monkeys and product placement; the product placement was so they could afford trained monkeys. Pete Wentz likes monkeys. I can't really add anything to that.
But enough of my amateur efforts to introduce the band; we have professionals to do that.
This is a primer. It doesn't have any pictures because it's not quite dessert. It's rather more like vegetables, in that you should read it because it'll tell you all the background you ever needed on the band, and can be interesting and/or entertaining.
Picspam by
forcedmovement . This contains a wide variety of pics of everyone in the band, as well as a few Q&A's from the official website, and downloads of all of the albums and some demos and bonus tracks. It's fun! Picspams are fun places to be, people.
Pete/Patrick picspam by
femmequixotic . However, if you're not into slash, the subtext is all in the captions; you can just scroll through the pictures and enjoy the pretty without reading along. Also, if you're not into slash, my recs will probably not make you happy. *snorts*
There was another picspam I wanted to rec, but it's lost in my heap of links. If I find it I'll edit to add.
Turn My Head Into Sound by
ficbyzee (other writings here, and they're all good, she's brilliant).[Pete/Patrick, NC-17 but not exceptionally graphic]. This was my first-ever bandslash fic, as I recall, and I really like it. Boys molesting each other onstage! Amazing writing, solid dialogue, and also, um, porn. I'm afraid this is going to be a trend in my recs today.
It's Like The Pied Piper (Only It's a Little Bit More Like a Cult) by
queenofhell . [Pete/Patrick, others as well, and not pairing-centric]. This fic is kind of a fandom classic in that it spawned the Cultverse, a sort of alternate universe in which band frontmen are all cult leaders. It's not an obvious AU, though, because on the outside everything looks perfectly normal; all of the creepiness takes place behind closed doors. This is almost disturbingly believable, a factor enhanced by the author's clever use of quote from actual songs, interviews, and entries from Pete's ten thousand blogs.
iphignia939 is another one of those authors for whom I can recommend everything she has written. Her writing quality and style is consistently excellent. She wrote an FOB/Sandman crossover, a fic where Pete is part fairy, an addition to Cultverse featuring creepy creepy Gabe Saporta from Cobra Starship, a fic in which Pete and Patrick were both girls and still recognizable... brilliant. In specific I'm going to rec this rather cute AU, "we could make beautiful music together - 18 (Glenview)" [Pete/Patrick, "not worksafe"] because it makes me happy. (Another reason to love her; she later decided that it wasn't porny enough and wrote an NC-17 remix. <3). Slash. I have gen recs, somewhere! I think. Maybe.
Call It Enough by
joyfulseeker [Pete/Patrick, probably PG-13 at the heaviest]. Pete Wentz decides to help Patrick get chicks. If you know a single thing about Pete Wentz, you know why this is the most amusing concept EVER. Bonus side of "locked on the roof in the cold/sharing body heat," which never, ever gets old.
A Common Understanding by
joyfulseeker [Yeah, guess the pairing. C'mon, guess. *grins*]. Pete and Patrick living a romance novel cliche in the far, far future. Very lovely and strange, dialogue beautifully old-fashioned without being stilted. Cameos from a few other bands. I can't even explain this, it has funny moments and touching moments and insightful moments. Quite good.
kosher_pareve is another great author. I haven't recced anything specifically merely because her writing is on crack in the good way and I just can't choose. One story has a scene where God is gloating about how much he's gonna fuck up [insert main character]'s life as he asks Moses to pass the fried chicken. Another has a Pete Wentz voodoo doll, complete with Sharpied-on tattoos. People ask My Chemical Romance for love advice. It just never gets old.
And lastly, my newly-discovered favorite thing ever! A manageably small guide to FOB bandslash by
lierdumoa , with BEST OF ALL a bunch of recs at the bottom separated into categories (Straight Up Crack, With A Side Of Crack, Soap Opera Epics, and The Cute). I realize it's unforgiveably lazy of me to rec by linking to a rec list. However, I don't know Ghostie's friend whom I'm reccing to and therefore can't cater to her preferences, gen or slash, porn or schmoop or angst, the way I prefer to do in reccing. This gives her, and also y'all, some flexibility to choose things that look interesting to you. Also, I have personally read every single fic on that rec list and they are all at the very least worth reading. Get to it!
That, um, kind of got out of control. And took a long time, time which would have been better but less entertainingly spent on math homework. LJ kept eating bits of things I'd written, so if something doesn't make sense, tell me. And enjoy!
