What To Do If

I Have Friended You: That's pretty much my standard gesture of respect-probably-tinged-with-awe. It means that I find you (and your fic, if you write it) so fascinating and interesting that I want to read everything you have to say. If I haven't commented on your journal yet, I'm probably working up the courage. I'll get there eventually! There is never any obligation to friend me back, although I would of course adore it if you did so.

You Have Friended Me: Most of my personal entries will be f-locked, but things that are mainly fandom- or interests-related are public. If you choose to friend me, I would be absolutely overjoyed, and if you drop me a comment here or in any entry I will gladly friend you back. I will do this anyways, but it might take a little longer for me to notice without a nudge.

I love you. Yes, really, I mean it; I love you.

I am in class right now, do you understand? IN CLASS. I should be taking notes on the return of Wahabism in Islamic culture! And instead... I just got a Twitter. Wingedwords (anywhere on the internet, nowadays, I'm either kitaloon or wingedwords or staykind, pretty much. Too many identities!)

Anyways, I haven't been keeping track of everyone's twitter names because I was determined to not get one, but... damn you, My Chemical Romance. If I fail the final in this class, I am blaming it on YOU bastards. So if you have a twitter, let me know what your name is and I will follow you like Creeper John follows girls through the halls of our dorm, except for how I am far prettier and more charming than John could ever be. *bats eyelashes*

ETA: My teacher just said "Now, this won't be on your final, but for your edification..." and I have NO IDEA what he said after that, because my brain just SHUT OFF. Boom. Not one iota of my attention is going towards the teacher anymore. I didn't even consciously make the decision, it just sort of... happened. Ah, college.

My floor is without a doubt the best, ever, in the whole world.

This morning we woke up at 7:00 because our R.A. got some guy from the Rugby team to come make us breakfast! I had a pancake, and the most incredibly delicious frozen-blueberry-mango-and-raspberry-with-orange-juice smoothie. Took my Honors test, which was... not fun; we had to identify and explain the significance of six quotes and write an essay, in 50 minutes. But then I was done with that and it was the WEEKEND.

We spent tonight decorating our dorm lounge! It is now THE MOST AWESOME, absolutely without a doubt. We have not one but TWO Epic Banners, little 3W's all over the wall (our wing is 3 West), pretty fabric and Christmas lights over the windows and the windows themselves covered in WINDOW MARKER DOODLES. I'm going to have to take pictures; I seeded the banner with Shakespeare quotes, and threw in a cute fish, and there's a sea monster named Nausicaa on the window for whom I take total responsibility.

Afterwards, there was delicious pizza from Giordanno's and now we're all chilling in the beauteous lounge watching the presidential debate. Tomorrow I'm going to have granola and yogurt for breakfast, then go on a photo walkabout around the neighborhood with Molly and Laura, and finally have a movie night with popcorn and Stardust and/or Chocolat. ♥ ♥ ♥

This, you guys. THIS is what I was hoping college would be like; not being depressed in my room, but fun things and friends and awesomeness. And markers, you cannot forget the markers. And glitter paint! I smeared glitter all over my cheeks and chased Molly around the room saying "Do I ~*~dazzle~*~ you?" in my best Seductive Vampire voice, it was good times.

P.S. I got an A on my first Honors paper. A paper that you pretty much weren't SUPPOSED to get an A on, and with a discussion leader who was quite possibly the hardest grader of all of them. He wrote "a pleasure to read!" on my paper. I AM IN HONORS STUDENT HEAVEN.

Things With Which I Will Reward Myself Upon Finishing My Essay

-An hour of yoga at the gym.

-The good ice cream in the dining hall.

-The first night I have free time, popping a bag of popcorn and watching Master & Commander.

-Reading The Spirit Ring by Lois McMaster Bujold, which my mom sent me in her care package. ♥

-Buy Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, the play, if I have room in my weekly budget for it. I probably will, unless I have to buy more cereal, so that should cut down on my cereal-munching problem. I have motivation!

Good times, people, good times.

ETA: I am done essaying for the night. Aside from quotes, ( here's what I have brainstormed )
thewingedword: (fear)
Prompt [underlining mine to emphasize important parts]: Both Odysseus and the four patriarchs in Genesis all engage in deception and trickery. Choose one of the patriarchs and compare him with Odysseus on how they work their deceptions and trickery and what the significance is in each case.

Secondary Prompt [inspiration only, I'm not actually answering this one]: In the face of evil we see in our world, and of the human suffering which is more common than we might like it to be, how can we believe in divine justice? Compare and contrast the justice-if you think it is justice-of the Greek gods and goddesses with the justice of the Lord in Genesis.

My Thesis [the general idea, not the actual thesis sentence]: Odysseus and Jacob both use physical disguises for the ultimate purpose of fulfilling their god-assigned destinies. However, Odysseus is regaining his rightful birthright, while Jacob is stealing that of his elder brother.
This reflects the differing ideas behind justice in the two cultures. In Homeric Greece, “justice” is equivalent to “custom”, and it is appropriate that Odysseus therefore be restored to his customary place. In the Bible, justice is entirely at the whim of the Lord, who is free to overturn the natural order of things, giving his favor to the secondborn instead of the firstborn, as the Greek gods are not.

DISCUSS. It's been kind of a long time since I wrote a paper; is this intelligent, relevant, does it answer the questions raised by the prompt, is it contestable? Am I overcommitting myself, addressing the second prompt too much and distracting myself and the reader from the essential prompt? Any kind of comment whatsoever appreciated.

So sometimes I get nervous and stressed and worried and anxious about college, and I worry that I'm going to spend four years and stupid amounts of money accomplishing nothing but being lonely and sad. When that happens, I think to myself: [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida  went to college, and look how awesome she is! She wrote Shoebox and a book and fell in love and graduated with amazing grades and a major in a really cool and interesting topic. So when I hit a bad spot, I think: What would Jaida do?

Usually the answer is, "be more awesome," which isn't precisely helpful, but I find it vaguely reassuring anyways.

I can't decide if this makes me more pathetic or creepy. I am such a DORK, honestly, but it does help, in a way. At least, it helps to know that someone made it through college in such a kickass fashion, although I can hardly hope to live up to even a fraction of that example. And she blogged about college sometimes, and sometimes it sucked and sometimes she loved it, and that's realistic enough that even I can relate to it after a grand total of a week and a half in higher education.

So... thank you, [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida , for managing to inspire me by sheer virtue of being an accomplished woman, a fascinating blogger, and an enviably cool person overall.

(Oh my god, DORK, I am such a. *flails around awkwardly*)

"Now Achilles was quite aware, for he had been told by his mother, that he might avoid death and return home, and live to a good old age, if he abstained from slaying Hector. Nevertheless he gave his life to revenge his friend, and dared to die, not only in his defense, but after he was dead. Wherefore the gods honoured him even above Alcestis, and sent him to the Islands of the Blest.

These are my reasons for affirming that Love is the eldest and noblest and mightiest of the gods; and the chiefest author and giver of virtue in life, and of happiness after death."

RECAP BABY

For the record, I'm starting this at 4:13 p.m. EST. When will I finish it? God only knows.

In order of album, the complete setlist was Headfirst for Halos, Helena, Give 'Em Hell, Kid, You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison, I'm Not Okay (I Promise), The Ghost of You, [possibly Thank You For The Venom, although I don't remember it], Hang 'Em High, Cemetery Drive, Dead!, This Is How I Disappear, Welcome To The Black Parade, I Don't Love You, House Of Wolves, Cancer, Mama, Sleep, Teenagers, and Famous Last Words, as well as Heaven Help Us, My Way Home Is Through You, and Desert Song. Kickass, seriously, I don't know how you could beat that.

And thus concludes the Epic Recap of Doom. End time: 7:49 p.m. Thank god.

BEST CONCERT EVAR. Sadly I did not meet anyone from the internets (or else I did, probably came terribly close to molesting them in the pit, and didn't notice, in which case I apologize sincerely), but my friends and I had a fabulous fabulous time. I'll do a full recap later with all the gory details, but here are the highlights

- MIKEY FUCKING WAY. You guys, sex god is such an understatement. He honestly distracted me from Frank about 80% of the time with the headbanging and the cut-glass jawline and the sexfaces and the skintight t-shirt. He has definitely acquired the knack (and I've also seen this done by LynZ and by Stefan Olsdal from Placebo) of playing the bass as if he were having sex with the instrument, and it's... interesting. To say the least.

- I bought the Mikeyway t-shirt after that. Are you even surprised?

- Being close enough to see Gerard's (initially) fluffy hair, his wedding ring, Mikey's space-pirate-hooker boots and dorky Tattoo of True Love, Frank's stubble and Godzilla t-shirt and the lazy curls of smoke from his cigarette. Gerard's lolarious singing facial expressions and hand gestures and that thing he does with his hips during I'm Not Okay. And that thing he did to Mikey's shoulder and neck during I don't even remember what song, nngh. The sheer fact that they were close enough to make the miraculous transformation from singing, dancing action figures into real fucking people.

- Frank's new sleeve. Why has no-one mentioned this to me? Why have there been no pictures? I feel so let down by the internet, people. He's definitely finished the sleeve on his right arm down to the wrist; I couldn't make out all of it because of the cuff, but there was a face right near the elbow, and possibly some birds, and I could clearly see the line around his wrist where it finished. It was hard to tell from the lighting, but it appeared to be blue, at least parts of it.

- ( the setlist )

Commentary, critique, and accounts of hilarity to come later once I've passed out and woken up again and my ears are no longer full of cotton, nor my legs of lead.

(but still it was the BEST CONCERT EVER) '

ETA: P.S. Also I met a boy. ♥

Star Wars is, very sadly, not much of a fandom nowadays. If it were, however, I am sure some of my opinions would be considered Unpopular Fandom Opinions. These include:

1) Harrison Ford is the only actor who can consistently make George Lucas' dialogue sound like it's totally that way on purpose.

2) Hayden Christensen's acting ability comes second to the fact that he is freakishly good-looking. Believe me, this goes against my own better judgement.

3) Leia > Padme.

I should probably explain that last one. I have no problems with Natalie Portman; I would marry Natalie Portman. I think that she's gorgeous and funny and a good actress, and that Padme managed to be at least one of these things. But the Prequel Trilogy is a relatively recent thing; the Original Trilogy was one of the shaping sci-fi influences of my young life, and Leia had a lot to do with that.

She was pretty, curvy, smart, and amazing. She was also badass, loudmouthed, a little emotionally clumsy, and wicked with a gun. Leia was a Princess with an attitude and a heart at the same time, and I thought she was the most awesome thing ever. At the time, I told myself that I wanted to grow up and be her; in retrospect, I'm pretty sure she was my first girlcrush.

Seriously, though, look at her. She is perfect. I remember watching some special where Carrie Fisher talked about how the directors all thought she was a bit heavy for the role and thinking they were absolutely mad. I would give a kidney to have a waist like that (I would, in fact, probably have to remove some internal organs to manage it). And even at the tender young age of I don't even know, maybe twelve, I thought that the metal bikini was something special.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is, but Spike TV aired the entire trilogy multiple times over the weekend, and I just had to share the love. I think that Star Wars is so universally known nowadays that we rarely take time to think about just how amazing it really is; instantly iconic, constantly enduring, innovative and fascinating and on such an immense scale that it blows your mind. But even on that huge scale, if you focus in, one single character has enough detail to keep you entranced for days.

(Not to mention the Luke/Leia/Han, my first OT3, or indeed OTP of any sort. I can spend hours explaining how they are the only logical end to the Original Trilogy, okay, George Lucas is officially the originator of any incest fascination I may have. See also: my icon.)

That was a long-winded explanation of why I have three new icons. The short explanation, of course, would be: ♥

Youtube comments are the best. Things. Ever. Once you sort through the chaff of "omg _ is like so totally hawt *heart breaks with longing*", you have a decent chance of hittting something amusing.

[In reference to a clip of Velvet Goldmine on youtube, which I was watching because it features Brian Molko doing some of the gayest dancing I have ever seen in a long and full life of observing really gay dance moves, and also wearing tighter-than-skin pleather leggings]:
- "This movie is proof that there is a God and He wants me to be happy. In my pants."

Amen to that, lady.

So I've had the new Hush Sound album since Saturday, and every time I listen to it it sounds better. GRETA. ♥ Her voice has this low-husky-sexy thing going on, and just a touch of vibrato. She sounds like a girl I saw at a show once- who, incidentally, looked a lot like Greta. I had such a crush on her for the half-an-hour or whatever they were performing..

Anyways, GRETAAAA. ♥ ♥ ♥ I miss Bob's voice a little, but Greta is lovely.

EDIT:

"The Hush Sound is prepared to unleash something unstoppable and very real on the world with Goodbye Blues. 'All of a sudden everything just clicked,' Greta says. 'We finally understood where the others were coming from. This record is the consummation of our unconsummated marriage.' " [bold mine]

WHERE IS THE FANFICTION, PEOPLE?

vacation

I just realized that I'll be on vacation when Panic At The Disco's next album, Pretty. Odd., drops. I was all set to be mad about this too, until I got my priorities straight. On the exact day that the album drops, I will be on the exquisite tropical island of Cozumel, off the coast of Mexico, sunbathing and swimming. With dolphins. The kind of hardcore, trick-performing, nose-kissing, towed-around-by-the-fin-of-a-dolphin swimming that you only ever see on the better class of television travel programs. The next three days will be similarly luxurious, although lacking in large aquatic mammals.

There will be no Panic At The Disco, but somehow I think the dolphins will console me, along with the cushiony white-sand beaches and plentiful Piña Coladas, courtesy of Mexico's eighteen-and-up drinking age. I can almost smell the sunscreen, guys; Ryan Ross can wait. This is going to be epic.

P.S. Say hello to my new icon! It says "vacation," "beaches," and possibly "interesting ruins to be explored." We will have to find out!

RYAN FUCKING ROSS.

♥  ♥  ♥

I don't even know what to do with you, oh my god. You make me happy like a happy thing.

ETA: That goes for you too, Brendon. But I think Ryan maybe won my heart just a little bit more.

I don't even know why this video exists, unless Brian Molko is personally out to kill me. For your listening and viewing pleasure, "Without You I'm Nothing," performed by Placebo and David Bowie. If you're somehow incapable of grasping the nearly infinite ways in which that is the best thing ever, Brian Molko seems to be wearing a dress. With combat boots. David Bowie is being his usual awesome self, do I need to say anything more?

Also, if you enjoyed it, have the song: Without You I'm Nothing feat. David Bowie- Placebo. In return, if any of you have any Placebo songs/albums/etc. you'd be willing to upload, I have... all of four songs. It's kind of pathetic.
