So Projekt Revolution yesterday was amazing. I don't know if any of you watched the live broadcast, or followed the Drama of My Chem's set, but they were also FUCKING FANTASTIC. I watch those videos and I barely even recognize the concert I was at, the footage is horrible and awkward and absolutely kills the energy that was there. If you want my version of what My Chem's show was like, I posted a superlong comment in
chemicalromance and I'll copy it here.
I just keep posting in different places, but I feel like it's important and needs to be said.
First off, were you expecting to get the feel and energy of being at a live show from sitting in front of your computer screens? You all know it doesn't work that way, or we wouldn't ever bother going to shows.
This is an important fact; there was no moshing during Main Stage shows because the seats go all the way to the front, and the "lawn" area in back is sharply sloped and slippery and crowded. The band didn't really seem to get that; Gerard asked a couple of times why people weren't moshing, when we physically COULDN'T, and he kept asking us to jump when jumping means hitting the seat in front of you, or the seat behind you, HARD. We did our best, but a lot of things aren't possible in that venue, and I think that confused the band a bit.
Also, the temperatures that day were insane. The high was near ninety, and under the pavilion with the stage lights on and everyone sweating and screaming, I'm positive it got hotter than that. The humidity was higher; it was supposed to rain that afternoon, but it didn't, so the humidity percentage stayed nearly 100%. Every single band was shedding clothing, from Julian K to HIM to LP, except for Gerard. Idiot. He was sweating so bad, I felt terrible for him.
The crowd was actually pretty hyped. HIM put on a pretty shitty set (sorry if you're a fan, but it was incredibly boring), but Taking Back Sunday got people excited by being flat-out amazing, and by MCR you could feel the energy. You can't SEE it on screen, because as I said we couldn't move, but the theater was crackling with it. We were tired, from the weather and from moshing in front of the Revolution Stage (which was in a parking lot, no seats), but we were excited. Hell, from the shirts, it looked like half the crowd was here mainly for My Chem.
The sound was badly mixed, on and off, through the entire show. You could barely hear the vocals in HIM (which, in their defense, may have contributed to the lameness); Taking Back Sunday was better, but by the beginning of My Chem's set the vocals were back to inaudible. So if you're wondering why people weren't singing along, there were parts of the song where I could barely hear Gerard.
There was also something really odd about the sound making people sound high-pitched, which I think even happened on and off during LP's set. This is mostly important because when the sound got better- and when Gerard seemed to hit his groove- was about five songs from the end. Y'all missed two of those. During Teenagers he seemed more like himself- a lot of strutting around and sexyvoices, a lot of jumping, and amazing crowd energy. Helena was one of the best songs; at the beginning he said "This song is about my Grandma, you guys might recognize it" and it was unspeakably adorable. Everyone sang along. During the drum-solo-type bridge his voice was breathy and overcome and it was gorgeous, honestly.
Cancer, again, was beautiful. He played it pretty straight compared to most of the set, but it felt appropriate for the song, and it was moving. His voice was at its best, a lot of people had lighters out, and it was just a gorgeous way to end the whole thing.
Lastly, THAT WAS NOT A FIGHT. Jesus. Frank stood up on Gerard's box and grabbed his head, Gerard leaned into it for a moment and then tried to walk away, but Frank wouldn't let go. Frank stumbled off the box, and was suddenly holding Gerard's head about six inches lower; they did the little play-scuffle that you saw, and then got off-balance and BOTH fell over. You can see them starting to fall right before the video cuts to the guitar. Gerard was on top, and he lunged back up and kept walking, while Frank turned the momentum into a backwards somersault and ended up on his knees.
Ahaha, longest post EVER. I guess I just got kind of defensive when everyone kept saying "Oh, the audience is so lame! They should be moving!". The audience was as good as I've ever seen at that venue, and the show was moving and incredible; there were a couple of guys in LP shirts next to me getting into it, which is saying something. Watching the video, I almost don't recognize this as the concert I was at. Way to fail and kill the energy, camera guys.
I'll post something about how I sincerely enjoyed this concert, and seeing my favorite band in the world live was the most amazing experience of my live, later. For now, a superquick grading of bands!
Madina Lake: Good. Crowd diving!
Saosin: Very good.
Mindless Self Indulgence: AMAZING. Put on an absolutely incredible live show; I didn't know any of the words to their songs, and I was still enthralled. Super sexy bassist.
Julien-K: Kind of yawn. Weird keyboards.
Placebo: HELL YES. I love Placebo. Great live as well.
Him: Most boring band of the entire show. Nearly put me to sleep. Yuck.
Taking Back Sunday: Woke us all up, got the crowd's energy back, played all of my favorite songs. Snippet of "Rehab" in the middle of one, which was awesome. Microphone stunts FTW!
My Chemical Romance: The best thing, ever, in the history of the world. Period. Started off a bit slow, but swiftly returned to their normal standards, and the last five songs were pure genius.
Linkin Park: There's just something about the headlining band. Great assortment of songs, well-arranged setlist, lots of movement and energy onstage. Definitely a band that you HAVE to see live if you like them even a little.
