I just learned music theory. The key word in that sentence is "theory", as in "In theory I just learned..."

In actuality, my head hurts a little. Major scale whaa? Chord progressions where? Although we decided that diminished chords belong solely in soap operas, so we'd play one and then shout "Your wife is pregnant!", "You have a rare jungle disease!", "Amnesia?!", etc. It was very amusing and I felt much better about my ignorance. Also I kept comparing things to painting and math and trigonometry, god, I am such a dork. Now my fingertips hurt again and I have sheets of scales and chord progressions to practice, but hopefully I will be cool someday.

(YAY MACROEZ)

Quick, I need a reason to justify bringing said guitar on a family vacation so that I will have two layers of defenses against family. Brainstorm!

I started Brave New World.

[personal profile] wraith816, you were right, it is a very strange book.

Random occurrence: I opened my bandpictures folder, looking for that macros, and it automatically shows this picture:

of two guys from Taking Back Sunday in the Preview window. At which point, of course, my dad walks by. *headdesk* I don't even know how I explained that one, god.

So I've had one guitar lesson, which means I can play... kind of horribly, yeah. The method my teacher uses basically involves working my way up string by string, starting with the first, each one having little exercises and then a song.

What song, you ask, could possibly be played on only the first string with only three notes? It's kind of Arabian. And annoying.
With the second string I've upgraded to Ode to Joy, which I remember learning on the violin in fifth grade, time flies. However, I still SUCK. Massively! I'm smart enough to realize that when you've been playing the guitar for less than a week, this is kind of inevitable. It still bothers me! The reason my schedule next year is 2/3 insane is that I am a crazy perfectionist. I haven't reached quitting levels of frustration, not nearly, I just practice kind of obsessively in my efforts to speed QUICKLY through the "complete and utter crap" stage of my learning development.

Oh shit, massive amounts of thunder and lightening. Will save this and finish it later, when electrical power outage is less imminent.

TWO OR SO HOURS LATER

So when I said "massive amounts of thunder and lighting" I really meant SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING, FLEE FOR COVER, *cue air raid sirens*. No, seriously, there were actual air raid sirens. I went downstairs with my cat and my book and my guitar and watched a couple episodes of Project Runway until it passed.

Now I forget what I was saying, dammit. Ah, well. In the vein of something I was talking with [profile] provetheworstabout, what books could I read that would sound pretentious and impressive but aren't that bad in actuality? If you recommend Les Mis I will smack you; that book was good, but in another way it was horrible. I was thinking I might want to expand my experience past strange old sci-fi from my parents' bookshelves, so. Enlighten me.

OMG OMG OMG I GOT A GUITAR.

I ended up getting an acoustic, which surprised me a bit at first but makes sense in retrospect. Maybe after I learn to play this I'll experiment with electric, but I'd rather learn the technique on the unenhanced instrument itself. Although I'll never get the chance to play electric because I'm never spending money again, god. Totally forgot to factor the price of a case into my cost estimates. Still, I fell absolutely in love with a beautiful Yamaha guitar, solid spruce top, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, laminate rosewood back and sides. Which won't mean much to anyone who doesn't play guitar, but basically, those are very good woods, and a solid top makes it a not-crappy guitar.

This is my baby:

The Yamaha FG730S, which again, doesn't really mean anything. It's just letters. Isn't it pretty? There's abalone inlay around the soundhole and black-and-cream stripes on the binding and it is as lovely as it is lovely-sounding. I got an electric tuner and tuned it properly, and then just played random chords until my fingers turned red and irritated. There may be blisters in my future, but I care not!

So I have a guitar, a hard case, a tuner, spare strings, and picks. I also have a phone number for a guy named Ray who will apparantly be willing to teach me to do more than play random chords. Yayness!

This probably doesn't seem like a big deal to anyone else, but it's the first instrument I've touched since before middle school, when I first let school take precedence. The fact that I'm consciously making an effort now, when I'm old enough for it to be important to me instead of just a chore, is kind of unexpected.
