Guys, the digital camera industry HAS MY NUMBER. They know my weaknesses. They know that, faced with a Kodak Z650 and a Kodak Z710, I will always go for the newer, the shinier, the tinier and the more expensive. Even though I am a complete camera NOOB who was absolutely confused when there were all of these cameras without viewfinders! I mean, granted, a 2.5" screen makes a viewfinder slightly less necessary, but I don't quite get the idea of taking pictures with my nose not practically pressed against them. Of course, where you do find viewfinders, they're not optical but electronic- tiny LED screens that zoom when you zoom. Interesting idea, really.

There's also this interesting trend towards more zoom as opposed to more megapixels. A camera with 6.1 MP and 10x optical zoom can cost $100 more than a camera with 10 MP and 3x optical zoom. However, optical zoom is a magnificent thing, so I can't really argue against it.

I'm kind of liking the Kodak easyshare cameras, but choosing among them is like choosing among different flavor Oreos. I'm afraid to venture into the cookie aisle as a whole. I realized I asked about specific cameras before, but does anyone have anything good or bad to say about a particular brand?

Now I just have to decide if I'm going to be taking fun pictures, touristy pictures, artsy pictures... *sighs and browses*

I've got a Canon Powershot SD600 and I love it. I don't do much fancy picture taking, but the little that I do do, it works pretty well. I recommend it.

I don't really like the Kodak Easy Shares just because they don't feel right in my hand. It doesn't feel quite real, for some reason. That's just me, though. :D

Pretty. Problem is they go right up to SD1000, and I have a hard time saying no! *deep breath* No cameras over $300, Kit. You Have The Willpower.

(My parents have a digital camera that's like 3.3 megapixels, it's huge and it cost so much money five years ago that Dad doesn't like to talk about it. I'm trying to avoid that kind of fiasco.)

My mom has a Kodak Easyshare and I can't stand it. There is a several second delay between the pressing of the button and the actual taking of the picture. And when you just want to put the pictures on your computer, you have to go through the really annoying Easyshare program, instead of just viewing the pictures as files that you can easily put in a folder. I have a Sony something-or-other... it's old, but I don't care for it much. Even the newer models that resemble it don't seem like the greatest cameras. A lot of my friends have various models of Canons, and I really like those.

Thanks, that's useful and not the kind of information they put in the specs. So annoying. I'm really going to have to go physically shopping for cameras and that takes forever!

Whatever you do, go to Best Buy (or someplace) and look at the cameras there. Specs are nice, but actually holding the camera in your hands is something completely different.

Also- I got my Powershot at Costco for 200 dollars. Sams might also have some good deals- warehouse stores are amazing.

I have a Kodak C533 and I am enchanted with it.

I haven't quite figured out the hold the camera at a distance to take a pic thing yet. I think my hands automatically begin to shake if the camera is not pressed up against my nose.

That's why I'm looking at the Canon Powershots, they have a teensy optical viewfinder that covers about 80% of the total picture, but it would really help me, I think.

I second Miss Spork's rec of the Canon Powershot. Mine's only an S410 but I love it to bits and it's easy to use.

I think I'm probably going to go for a Powershot, they seem compact and user-friendly and not too ruinously expensive. Whee!
