"the master and margarita" by ... some russian guy, i forget who. find a good translation of that one, it's a pretty quality book. i think it qualifies under "pretentious and impressive but ... not that bad"
Uhmmmm. Michael Chabon is a quality recent author who might give you a little street cred, but who knows. I'm always one to rec Saramago -- high on pretentious factor, but if you can get into his style also high on the AWESOME factor. (The style is definitely something that takes a little getting used to, and you probably either like it or hate it ...)
Is Salinger too recent? Hemginway = another acquired taste. Also possibly still falls into the "too recent" category. I don't know just how pretentious you're going for, haha.

(also, that seems like a weird method to me but all i really know is how to read tabs and super-slowly plunk out a couple of chords, so.)
