The catapult worked, huzzah! There was some slight angst when it turned out that the latex tubing powering the thing had loosened, but I yanked it back tight and everything was fine. Although I think I would have worn a different shirt if I'd known people would be photographing me on my knees and leaning forward to adjust the release mechanism (i.e., a turtleneck. Who knows, the everyone may be getting a lovely view right down my shirt if those photos end up in the paper).
There was a rather amusing moment when two utter geeks writing a paper on catapults took some photos (with rather unnecessary use of the zoom, in my opinion) and then asked for a quote.
"Physics is my girlfriend," I replied.
"Um... what?" they asked confusedly.
"Also, catapults are a great deal of fun if they work properly and don't take your fingers off!" I added cheerfully, and wandered away under their blank stares.
