Star Wars is, very sadly, not much of a fandom nowadays. If it were, however, I am sure some of my opinions would be considered Unpopular Fandom Opinions. These include:

1) Harrison Ford is the only actor who can consistently make George Lucas' dialogue sound like it's totally that way on purpose.

2) Hayden Christensen's acting ability comes second to the fact that he is freakishly good-looking. Believe me, this goes against my own better judgement.

3) Leia > Padme.

I should probably explain that last one. I have no problems with Natalie Portman; I would marry Natalie Portman. I think that she's gorgeous and funny and a good actress, and that Padme managed to be at least one of these things. But the Prequel Trilogy is a relatively recent thing; the Original Trilogy was one of the shaping sci-fi influences of my young life, and Leia had a lot to do with that.

She was pretty, curvy, smart, and amazing. She was also badass, loudmouthed, a little emotionally clumsy, and wicked with a gun. Leia was a Princess with an attitude and a heart at the same time, and I thought she was the most awesome thing ever. At the time, I told myself that I wanted to grow up and be her; in retrospect, I'm pretty sure she was my first girlcrush.

Seriously, though, look at her. She is perfect. I remember watching some special where Carrie Fisher talked about how the directors all thought she was a bit heavy for the role and thinking they were absolutely mad. I would give a kidney to have a waist like that (I would, in fact, probably have to remove some internal organs to manage it). And even at the tender young age of I don't even know, maybe twelve, I thought that the metal bikini was something special.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is, but Spike TV aired the entire trilogy multiple times over the weekend, and I just had to share the love. I think that Star Wars is so universally known nowadays that we rarely take time to think about just how amazing it really is; instantly iconic, constantly enduring, innovative and fascinating and on such an immense scale that it blows your mind. But even on that huge scale, if you focus in, one single character has enough detail to keep you entranced for days.

(Not to mention the Luke/Leia/Han, my first OT3, or indeed OTP of any sort. I can spend hours explaining how they are the only logical end to the Original Trilogy, okay, George Lucas is officially the originator of any incest fascination I may have. See also: my icon.)

That was a long-winded explanation of why I have three new icons. The short explanation, of course, would be:

Kit Kit you need to talk to Polly and to [livejournal.com profile] niicoly! Star Wars fandom is alive and well apparently!

Polly defriended me! Sadfaces all around. And I don't think I ever met [livejournal.com profile] niicoly. I wish I had, though, because that would make me ten kinds of happy! As it is, all I can do is argue with my friends, and they don't care enough to make it really worthwhile.

No, it's okay! I don't make a big drama deal about defriendings, particularly if it's someone whom I don't really share an active fandom with anymore, and whom I haven't talked to in awhile.

It's still sadfaces, mostly because sometimes I miss forums and PPN and being able to be incoherent as much as I want. Change is life, though, I suppose.

Of course Leia is better than Padme! And I love Natalie Portman in other movies. But Leia wins.

I love Natalie Portman so, so much. But. LEIA. ♥

The times I liked Padme most were when she was wandering around in a white jumpsuit and odd hair being all "Hey, in twenty years my daughter will pull this off way better than me!"

Star Wars was my first fandom in a way, in that I was 12 years old and writing terrible MarySues and had no clue people other than my friends did that too.

At the time, I told myself that I wanted to grow up and be her; in retrospect, I'm pretty sure she was my first girlcrush.

Same here. She and Han were the first characters I ever really, truly fell for.

ETA: Also, oddly enough, as I'm telling [livejournal.com profile] lunachickk, you think I'd be all over Luke/Leia as a pairing, but I just can't do it. Han/Leia OTP for ever.

Aww, that's adorable. You were there for my first fandom, which also involved a lot of Mary Sues, incidentally.

If that bikini weren't so overdone I would totally buy one for Halloween someday. MAYBE I STILL WILL. I mean, I look more like Leia than I do like any other movie character, really.

The thing is, I have no huge interest in just Luke/Leia. It has to be all three of them together to make me really happy. Leia/Han is obviously awesome, but if you throw in Luke then I get bonus incest and best-friend-lovin', and also I get all flaily for reasons I can't properly explain.

The original trilogy was a huge part of my "upbringing" as well, so I totally concur. These kids don't know where it's at!

And my SW days were pre-internet, so if you've got a handy list of your old OT3 fics (yours or recs) lying around--good ones--lemme know.

My parents have a thing for classic sci-fi; it was Star Wars, Star Trek, and Andre Norton all around when I was growing up. Good times.

The only Luke/Leia/Han fic I've found so far that I'd really rec is this one (http://community.livejournal.com/skywalkathon/2937.html); it's more implied than explicit, as the header says, but [livejournal.com profile] penknife is a good author whom I've read before, and it's an interesting little snippet-fic.

I'll let you know if I find anything else, because the search is far from over.
