OMG OMG OMG I GOT A GUITAR.

I ended up getting an acoustic, which surprised me a bit at first but makes sense in retrospect. Maybe after I learn to play this I'll experiment with electric, but I'd rather learn the technique on the unenhanced instrument itself. Although I'll never get the chance to play electric because I'm never spending money again, god. Totally forgot to factor the price of a case into my cost estimates. Still, I fell absolutely in love with a beautiful Yamaha guitar, solid spruce top, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, laminate rosewood back and sides. Which won't mean much to anyone who doesn't play guitar, but basically, those are very good woods, and a solid top makes it a not-crappy guitar.

This is my baby:

The Yamaha FG730S, which again, doesn't really mean anything. It's just letters. Isn't it pretty? There's abalone inlay around the soundhole and black-and-cream stripes on the binding and it is as lovely as it is lovely-sounding. I got an electric tuner and tuned it properly, and then just played random chords until my fingers turned red and irritated. There may be blisters in my future, but I care not!

So I have a guitar, a hard case, a tuner, spare strings, and picks. I also have a phone number for a guy named Ray who will apparantly be willing to teach me to do more than play random chords. Yayness!

This probably doesn't seem like a big deal to anyone else, but it's the first instrument I've touched since before middle school, when I first let school take precedence. The fact that I'm consciously making an effort now, when I'm old enough for it to be important to me instead of just a chore, is kind of unexpected.

I KNOW OMG. What did I do to deserve so much cool? The guy at the store was all helpful and carried the case out to the car, saying "I'll be your roadie for a little bit!" and I was all *FLAIL*

The Sharpest Lives. I listened to it on repeat for a solid hour at work. LOUD. On my iPod.

Death! is great too.

Yay! The Sharpest Lives is good, it's got lovely complex internal rhyme and meter. It reminds me a bit of the Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge album, more than any other song on Black Parade but This Is How I Disappear. Sigh. Why must these things have such damned long names?

Dead! just has those amazing guitar riffs. Although I'm a big fan of The End, which is very Pink Floyd-esque guitar, somehow. I suppose Dead! is more Queen at that. Just. GUITAR. Ray Toro is a guitar god and that is all.

O Kit! Someone in capschat last night had a photo of herself with William Beckett. I saved it to show you; it's on my HD at home.

(I have some The Academy Is... on my playlist today, too.)

Nifty! I'm jealous, we got close to him, but not close enough for good pictures. Sigh.

Yay! See, I am slowly corrupting you to the pop-punk side, muahaha.

You are!

LOL, we were discussing playlists at work and no one had heard of any of the music I listen to. I had some Cake on there today too, and some other stuff.

I sent the pic to your username@livejournal.com - I hope it gets there!

YAY GUITAR! That is so cool Kit! I'm really glad you followed through on something that obviously means a lot to you. Learn to play lots of cool songs!

*flails*

Right now I'm trying really hard not to do anything, because I don't want to learn anything wrong and have to unlearn it. So mostly I hold it, tune it, pet it, talk to it, and generally act like a complete freak. *grins*

V. cool! Yamaha is a really good brand! (My flute and piccolo are both Yamaha's) I have a similar one. I hardly ever play it though.

It is! There was another guitar from them, similar but that the sides and back were solid sycamore instead of laminated rosewood, and it had wood marquetry instead of abalone inlay. I was so tempted, but it was another hundred dollars and I don't know enough about guitars to make it worth it.

Yeah, I ramble. The point is that it came down between two Yamaha guitars for me, so yes, good brand.

I've really never owned an instrument of my own, so this is completely new for me!

That's cool! I remember when I got my first flute. It was a great experience!

My hubby's the guitar player around here. He's more into the electric, though. He actually has 4 right now. Not sure how well you know the brands or anything, but he's got 2 Fender Stratocasters, a Gibson Explorer, and a Gibson Les Paul.

WHAT. He has two Gibsons? Good lord. I actually know a decent bit about electrics, since I thought about getting one before deciding it would be simpler to learn on an acoustic. Fender is a good brand, Gibson is an amazing brand.

Anyways, your husband has four really awesome guitars, and I am deeply envious. Particularly of the Explorer, those are very cool-looking.

Yep, 2 Gibsons, and they are awesome! I really wish I could play like him. He is a wonderful player, and he knows all the tricks! :-)

*sighs happily* That must be so cool. I have a few friends who play band instruments, mostly brass and woodwind, but I don't know anyone who's decent at playing guitars or knows a thing about them. Once again, Wiki and Google were my friends in figuring shit out.

The rosewood is this gorgeous dark red-brown, I wish the picture gave you a better view of it. It is so shiny I can see myself in it, literally, this beautiful mirror-finish. My cat is jealous because I spend more time talking to and petting the guitar than him. *laughs*

I did, I really did. I don't spend money often, but when I do, it's usually on something big that I've wanted for a long time, like this. First instrument I've ever actually owned, so it means a lot to me. *sighs happily*

On the other hand, I'm so attached that it's going to be difficult to leave it! We're taking a short trip in a couple of weeks, and I'm already twitching at the thought. *snorts*

*flails* Omigosh rosewood! I played this cello with lots of rosewood, and it was a whole other experience. I adore rosewood on instruments.

There was a guitar with sycamore, and another with cedar, but something about the rosewood... god, it has such a rich sound. The sycamore was probably a bit brighter-sounding, but the rosewood is so warm, I fell in love with it.
